DANCE CENTER / VANCOUVER - Décembre 2000
Dance/se Net

Monaco, primarily known for its famous royal family, is establishing itself as the "new international rendezvous for dance and dance-lovers." The tiny Mediterranean Principality is indicating a solid commitment to arts and culture with the first edition of the Monaco Danses Dances Forum December 13 to 17, 2000 in the new 35,000 square foot Grimaldi Forum. This international festival, open to all forms and sensibilities of dance, will include the Monaco World Dance Awards, 40 dance-linked multimedia projects, a Dance Screen Festival, audition opportunities, panels, workshops, photographic exhibitions and more.

Visitors to the Monaco Danses Dances Forum website can participate in the Nijinsky Dance Awards by voting for their favourite male dancer, female dancer, choreographer, dance company, choreographic work and for the jury's special award. Internet voters comprise one third of the overall vote; the remainder will be determined by "experts" in the field. Canadian Édouard Lock has been nominated for a choreographic award for LaLaLa Human Step's Salt/Exaucé.

Included in the festival is the category of Dance and New Technologies. Out of 140 proposed projects, 40 were chosen by an international jury...

One of my favourite websites chosen for the Internet Websites category is that of Compagnie Magali & Didier Mulleras: www.mulleras.com, and the “mini@tures” project. Magali & Didier Mulleras have been creating contemporary dances works in Béziers, France since 1988 at the Centre Chorégraphique C.E.D. Their website is a testimony to their eccentric and quirky approach to dance. The company is well known for their videos shorts, Mini@tures, which garnered them a special jury prize at the CYNET Art Festival 2000, in Dresden, Germany. There are seven episodes of Mini@tures on the website. Each episode contains ten shorts, and all are about a minute long. A Real Player plug-in is necessary to view them. The minimalist choreography is set to spacey-electronica music composed by Didier Mulleras, perfectly complementing the oddball nature of these clips.
